Synopsis
Penny is passionate about saving the old growth forest, but soon learns that many of her friends are more interested in listening to the free bands at the concert than actually saving the forest. R.J. tries to make her see both sides, but when they run into each other later, he wants nothing to do with her, because his father lost his job because of her protesting. Kevin has been in love with Sheri from afar for a long time, but finally gets up the courage to ask her out. Their first date is almost a failure, especially when some local black teens make derogatory comments about their budding romance. Carol is introduced to Beth, who hires her on, no questions asked, as the band's new guitar player. Carol doesn't quite catch Beth's less than subtle come ons.

Jamie is thrilled when Penny Foster asks him to be her chemistry partner when hers is sick and Carol doesn't show. He asks her out, and the two seem to have a nice date, but Jamie doesn't understand that for Penny, guys are a dime a dozen and no man should ever get serious. Not only that, but he soon learns that his parents marriage isn't doing as well as he thought when he spots his father kissing another woman. He takes some of his frustration out on Penny when he sees her flirting with R.J. after she came on strong on their date together. Jamie can't help trying to warn his mother, Margaret, that his father, Don, is stepping out. He apologizes to Penny, but later confronts his father with what he saw on Seymour Street. Jamie makes his dad a deal...as long as he lays off him completely, Jamie won't tell his mother. Coach Kolaski is pleased to introduce the class to their newest teammate, R.J., a transfer from St. Joseph's, a team that beat them every year. Tom is less than thrilled when R.J. insists on offering advice to him on how to play basketball better. Later R.J. tells Penny that his father, a logger, will land on his feet, so she shouldn't worry about him losing his job. R.J. tries to apologize to Tom, who resents R.J. because of his natural skill. Initially Tom blows him off, but finally decides to try for the sake of the team.

Synopsis
Carol is thrilled when her band gets a paying gig, even though all the teachers are on her back about skipping school lately. When she tells her parents the good news, her father tells her she's not going, and grounds her. While in her room, Carol sees the image of herself as a rocker in the mirror telling her to follow her dreams, and the image of herself in a suit sitting on the desk telling her to get an education. She decides to follow her dreams, and heads off to the concert. The concert is a total bomb, and the night is topped off by two of the loudest hecklers trying to get Beth to 'go to the park' with them, so they can teach her what a real man is like. Carol grabs Beth and kisses her, to make a point to the guys that they are not interested. When she apologizes for the kiss, Beth is offended by the fact that not only does Carol view kissing her as scary, but also that Carol seems to be leading her on. Carol returns home to realise that she has been suspended from school for two weeks after walking out on her history test. Tia is amused to find a love poem in her locker. Word soon gets around school that she's trying to find out who wrote it, and she's bombarded with people looking to prove that they are her ideal man. She's feeling overwhelmed, and asks Rachael for help. Rachael is offended when Tia tells her that she will never have this problem, because she's 'just one of the guys', and stalks off. After talking to Kevin, who assures her that there is a guy out there for her who will want her because of who see is and not how she looks, she comes back to apologize to Tia, and offers her a list of students who received As in English the year before. Tia assumes it's a young man named Vincent, and asks him out. Vincent tells his friends he has no idea what she was talking about, but wasn't about to turn her down. Kevin and Sheri are closer than ever. Sheri announces that she got into the best university in the country, and Kevin is thrilled for her. While heading home that day, Sheri begins to feel faint, and after dropping all her books, nearly collapses onto the stairs. Sheri makes a doctor's appointment (and apologizes to Penny over the phone for not being able to go out), and the next day at school, is visibly devastated when she tells Kevin she can never go to university. When he wants to know why, she shocks him with news that she's pregnant.
